FAQ

What sizes?

You can have any size you want as long as it’s 19 feet in diameter (265 square foot floor space). We’re just getting started and will introduce different sizes in the future.
We do, however, have a hallway structure that can connect multiple Zomes if you desire more space.

When do I get my Zome?

We’ve opened our doors to reservations right now; when you reserve a Zome, we’ll let you know how long the wait is. Right now it’s about 4-6 weeks before we’ll call you with the time to complete your payment and schedule delivery. Installation takes around a week.

Price?

Glad you asked, our pricing is available here:

Pricing and Reservation

Foundation?

Optional, depending on whether or not you’re placing your Zome on a pre-existing patio or floor, and whether or not you want it permitted. Our Zomes are self contained designs that don’t need foundations for structural integrity, but in order to be permitted or withstand severe seismic loads we offer an integrated concrete slab foundation solution at no extra cost. Our team will come out and set up the foundation days before your Zome arrives.

Based out of?

We hand build our Zomes in our factory in Petaluma, California.

Wind and Snow?

Zomes are being engineered to meet or exceed the requirements of modern building codes, including California's stringent seismic design requirements. They are designed to provide a safe and resilient structure suitable for a variety of severe conditions. Strong winds of 100 MPH and snow loads of 15 PSF are also taken into account to ensure that the building will withstand most, common loading situations. The design will not be applicable to 100% of California because the state has smaller zones of very extreme loading in very lightly populated areas. Though, the design parameters have been selected to go well beyond what the average California home is designed to handle. The Zome engineering State certification is moving full steam ahead and expected to be completed in early 2022.

Exterior Repair?

The ceramic cement shell is tough. But things happen. A rogue baseball won’t hurt, but a big tree limb could crack it. A crack doesn’t impact the structural integrity of the Zome since it is mesh enforced. However, Zomes can be repaired swiftly by patching. If you need it, we will ship you a bucket of our bio-ceramic cement that you can mix with water and apply to the crack to re-seal it. If worse comes to worst, you can individually replace the Zome’s panels.

Materials sourced from?

Short answer: As locally as possible. The perlite is mined right next door. The Magnesia is from Michigan, and the EPS is US-based. Our wood panels come from lumber harvested from renewable, local sources.

Why is this better than a yurt?

It’s different. If you’re looking for the cheapest possible option it’s hard to beat a yurt. But if your hope is for a structure that is better insulated, won’t burn or rot or mold, and will be around longer than your house, we think it’s worth the extra cost.

Can Zomes Move?

We designed our Zomes to be disassembled and moved if needed. If you choose to have your Zome be built to seismic load code and permitted, the foundation will be permanent but the Zome itself can be disassembled and moved by our team within a ten day window.

Heating and cooling?

We offer an integrated HVAC system option that will cool/warm and dehumidify your Zome to perfection! Whether or not you go with our system, Zomes are built compliant to title 24 standards. Meaning they retain temperatures and release moisture well.

R-value of the insulations?

The walls are rated R-16. Which is great, but it's only one dimension of thermal insulation. The thermal mass, and shape contribute to our Zomes being thermally superior to traditional buildings.

Custom-made furniture?

Glad you asked. we currently offer a kitchen, loft, bathroom and shelves, more is coming on the way!

Can I paint the interior or exterior?

Yes. We’ve chosen a wood for the interior that we think looks great and enhances the Zomes' natural beauty, but it is also easy to paint to fit the interior you want. You can paint the exterior as well if you choose.

Maintenance?

Pretty much no maintenance is needed. Rodents and insects are not interested in ceramics or foam. Mold doesn't grow in the walls. Moisture has little to no impact. The shell is tough and doesn't settle or warp. If for any reason you needed repairs or replacements on your Zome we would be happy to assist.

Waterproof?

Yes. We initially wanted to make Geodesic domes, but it turns out they are notoriously leaky. We scratched our design and built our Zomes from the ground up to create a lapped connection between the panels. This, along with our air-tight rubber seal, makes sure water stays where it should.

FAQ

Assembly Time?

Our Zomes were designed to be assembled with no heavy or specialized machinery, after we build you our foundation our installation crew should take 1 week to completely assemble your Zome on site.

Flooring?

Our zomes come with their own bamboo floor designed and built with integrated flooring and insulation.

Can you wire it for electric or solar?

Yes! our Zomes come as plug and play, just connect power to the integrated electric system and you’ll have lights and electricity throughout.

Why should I consider this over a yurt?

There’s a comparison table here with more details, but Zomes land somewhere between a yurt and permanent structure, as mobile and flexible as a yurt, but fire-proof, snow-proof, and the insulation isn’t honestly comparable. However, yurts are significantly cheaper, we hoped to make your decision easier with the financing options available and we obviously think it’s worth the extra cost but it’s something to consider.

Hanging on the walls?

Yes. Each panel has an internal "nailer" frame that's 1.5 inches thick. That's how the interior wood panels are attached. You can use this frame to hang shelves, pictures, dream catchers, or anything else you like.

Plumbing?

If you opt for our model that comes with a kitchen or bathroom the plumbing is integrated in our Zome, our pre-installation team will work with you and let you know where you need to bring your piping to, and we can plug that into your Zome for fully functional plumbing

Can you run a chimney?

No, we are offering panels specifically designed to vent air though and these can be used around the kitchen, bathroom, or anywhere you desire.

Fire shelter?

No. Legally, we can't recommend you shelter in our Zomes during a fire. In case of a fire, you should evacuate immediately and follow local authorities’ recommendations. What we can tell you is that we keep our photo albums and favorite stuffed animals in our Zome, and if we were stuck in a fire and couldn't evacuate, we would shelter there with our kids and pets.

Skylight?

Glad you asked! Each Zome comes with an integrated skylight. It is not however operable.

How many windows can I have?

You can have anywhere from none to three. This is dependent on what you’re using your zome for and the price will change accordingly.

You can choose the number of windows at checkout and our installation team will help you decide on where you want them on your Zome when they come to install. There’s flexibility there within some limitations.
